Brazilian solar power producer Thopen is exploring entry into Bitcoin mining as a way to absorb surplus electricity from the country’s expanding renewable energy sector, CEO Gustavo Ribeiro told BN Americas. Ribeiro, who also heads Pontal Energy, said Thopen is evaluating options such as data centers and localized Bitcoin mining operations to utilize excess generation capacity. The move comes as several energy producers and crypto miners in Brazil explore partnerships to turn the nation’s renewable energy surplus into a new digital infrastructure opportunity.

Canaan has secured a 4.5-megawatt (MW) contract to supply Avalon A1566HA-488T water-cooled ASIC miners for a project aimed at stabilizing Japan’s electric grid. The initiative will use Canaan’s proprietary technology to balance grid load in real time through dynamic overclocking and underclocking, optimizing power efficiency and responsiveness. The company said the system will automatically adjust frequency, voltage, and hashrate to match energy supply and demand, marking a step forward in integrating Bitcoin mining with smart-grid management in Japan.

American Bitcoin, the mining and treasury firm co-founded by Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr., has added 1,414 Bitcoin (worth $163 million) to its holdings, bringing its total reserves to 3,865 BTC, valued at nearly $445 million. Chief Strategy Officer Eric Trump said the company aims to grow its Bitcoin-per-share ratio as a key metric of shareholder value. Formed in March after Hut 8 acquired a majority stake through a mining asset swap, American Bitcoin continues to position itself as a long-term Bitcoin accumulation platform.

Argo Blockchain has begun a court-supervised restructuring process aimed at reorganizing its debt and equity after years of financial strain. According to its published practice statement letter, the company will hold a convening hearing on Nov. 5, followed by creditor and shareholder meetings on Nov. 28, and a court sanction hearing on Dec. 8. If approved, Argo’s delisting from the London Stock Exchange will take effect at 8 a.m. on Dec. 9, relieving it from most U.K. regulatory and disclosure obligations under the Market Abuse Regulation and Takeover Code.

The government of British Columbia (BC) has announced a permanent ban on new crypto mining connections to the province’s hydroelectric power grid, citing record-high electricity demand. Under the new legislation taking effect in fall 2025, the province will also impose limits on electricity access for data centers and AI facilities. BC officials said the move aims to ensure sufficient clean and affordable energy for traditional industries such as mining, natural gas, and LNG, as well as for emerging sectors with “greater long-term economic value.”
